The Story of Dumortierite
Born in the core of the Earth and brought to the surface through hydrothermal veins, dumortierite radiates in blue to guide us to a higher understanding of ourselves. As a stone that has broken through the layers of the Earth to get to us, it shows us how to break through the pressures, barriers, and obstacles in our own lives. It hones and concentrates your energy on the higher wisdom you have access to and pulls it down into your body, into your core, into your bones.
Named after the French paleontologist who discovered it, Eugene Dumortier, this often overlooked blue stone is here to calm and support our minds. It cleanses and settles the overactive thoughts, worries, and anxious spiraling, sweeping away the clouds and cobwebs so you can get a clear view of the solutions. It stimulates your mental powers and psychic awareness, activating your higher mind and visionary abilities. Physical Properties
Appearance
Dumortierite is most often found in a dark indigo blue that’s mottled with grey with some translucence. It can also appear in shades of green, brown, and more rarely, purple or pink. It most often forms in fibrous clusters, but can also appear as thin needle-like crystals within quartz.
The blue of dumortierite is associated with regulating and balancing qualities. It brings renewal and refreshment, truth and self-awareness. Deep blue is associated with the kidneys in Daoist stone medicine, which are where our emotional energy is stored in the body. Dumortierite cleanses and clears this stored, emotional baggage, bringing in fresh, new energy to enliven you.
Composition
Dumortierite is an aluminum borosilicate with other mineral impurities, including iron, which is what gives it its blue coloring. Aluminum is calming to the nerves and cools heat in the body. Boron supports the bones and cell membranes. Iron supports the spleen’s production of blood. This unique mineral combination contributes to its metaphysical effects.
It has an island silicate formation, which is energetically fortifying, strengthening resistance, and breaking up accumulations in the body and energy field. It has an orthorhombic crystal structure, which relates to the yin quality of fire in Daoist stone medicine, which means it moves fire energy downward from the mind and upper body into the lower body, reducing fevers and inflammation, cooling anger, quelling the flames of anxiety, and settling nervous energy.

Dumortierite comes in a few different varieties, all with similar healing qualities as described above, with a few differences:
Dumortierite in Quartz
This is a gorgeous and unique variety that consists of thin prismatic crystals of dumortierite clustered within clear quartz. It looks like blue fireworks captured in a stone. The quartz brings a more active and targeted influence to dumortierite’s energy.
Nevada Rose
This is a rare variety of purple/pink dumortierite that originates from one site in Northern Nevada, USA. Its impurities of titanium create its different coloring. This brings its energy down into the heart space to work on a more emotional level rather than mental.
Sunset Dumortierite
This variety includes shades of rusty orange and brown within the classic dumortierite blue, adding a more grounded and embodied element to it. This variety is mostly used in jewelry and sold as beads.

Care + Cleansing for Dumortierite
You can give dumortierite a quick cleanse by running it under warm water for a few minutes, and then dry it with a soft cloth. You can also use the element of Air to cleanse it by running it through the smoke of some incense, an herbal smudge, or burning wood.
If you have durmortierite as a necklace or bracelet, you can hang it in a safe spot from a tree branch for a few hours so it can be cleansed by the air and wind, and ground any disharmonious energy it has absorbed down into the Earth through the tree’s roots. You can also place a dumortierite stone down on or near the tree’s roots overnight for a deep cleansing.
You can recharge it by placing it on a clear quartz cluster overnight, or in the sunshine for 10-15 minutes. Don’t leave it in the direct sun or heat for too long, though, as this may damage it.
