The Story of Jet
Born from the decomposed remains of Araucaria trees over 180 million years ago, this Jurassic era stone is incredibly grounding and stabilizing for the darkest emotions we can experience. When you’re going through deep grief, depression, or a dark night of the soul, jet can bring you support, stability, and relief. It absorbs the heavy, harmful energies, transforming them into clear energy you can use to propel yourself forward.
The trauma, disappointments, and insecurities that become stored in our body and energy patterns are addressed by jet. When we look out to the world and see only things that need to be criticized or fixed, jet can help balance out all that energy that you’re focusing on external events and things that are out of your control, bringing you back to your personal power. Jet holds an ancient history with humanity, with relics found made from it as long as 15000 years ago. The most famous jet deposit is from Whitby, England, where it was mined for hundreds of years using simple hand tools. “Whitby jet” is considered to be the best quality you can get, and is still available today. It reached its pinnacle in the Victorian era when it was used to create beautiful black jewelry that was worn as a sign of mourning, brought into prominence by Queen Victoria after the death of her husband, Prince Albert.
This seemingly simple black stone also holds electric energy, as it becomes statically charged when you rub it with wool or silk (just like amber). Made primarily from carbon, the foundational element of all life on Earth, jet connects us back to the electric force of life itself, the rhythmic pulse of the Earth. Appearance
The figure of speech “jet black” refers to this stone and its pure black, opaque coloring. It’s often black as black can be, with a glossy luster when polished, but can also be found in dark brown, or occasionally with brassy inclusions of pyrite, which give it a metallic sheen.
The blackness of jet is associated with the void of creation itself, with the depths of the Earth, and the ability to absorb the full spectrum of light. Black is associated with the kidneys in traditional Chinese medicine, which is where we store both our life force energy and our stuck, stagnant emotions. Thus, our life force can become depleted when we experience heavy, dense emotions such as fear, grief, and depression, but jet works to absorb and transmute these dark energies to build our essential life force energy back up.
Composition
Jet is about 75% carbon, 12% oxygen, with hydrogen and sulfur comprising the rest. It’s technically a “mineraloid” as it has no crystalline structure. It was formed as trees became waterlogged and buried by organic-rich sediment, and then absorbed the hydrocarbons released by the decay of the algae, plankton, and plant matter all around it.
It’s a rare type of lignite, which is coal, but it retains the living life force energy of the organic matter from which it was formed. It’s lightweight in feel, especially in comparison to other stones of the same size, and warm to the touch. Jet is a fossilized remembrance of life that once lived, and the consciousness it contained.

Care + Cleansing for Jet
As a cleansing stone itself, jet can absorb a lot of unwanted energy, so it’s good to cleanse it ever so often, especially after periods of using it when you’ve felt very emotionally charged.
You can do a quick cleanse in running water, but do not leave it submerged in water for any length of time, as it can get damaged. You can also cleanse it in a bed of sea salt or on a slab of selenite overnight. You can also waft it through the smoke of a smudge stick or incense until it feels lighter and clearer to you intuitively.
You can then recharge jet’s essential earth energy by placing it on top of a bed of hematite stones, or directly upon the earth (in a dry spot) when it’s dark out and overnight. Be careful not to let it sit in direct sunlight for any amount of time, as this too might damage it.
It’s a very soft stone, so be careful not to store it with pointed or rough crystals that can scratch its surface.
