September Equinox: Balance Within and Without
Twice a year, we experience a moment of rare balance between light and darkness, day and night. The Equinox marks a shift in our relationship with the Sun and solar energy: this is an opportunity to reflect on the places in our lives where balance has been lost and do what is necessary to restore harmony.
Across ancient cultures and traditions, these moments have been tracked, honored, and celebrated in sacred ceremonies, as they marked potent moments of transition and change. Both Solstices and Equinoxes are opportunities to align with the changes occurring in the natural world. These events remind us that we are not separate from natural cycles: we are an integral part of nature. As we experience a change in our relationship with the Sun and his light, something within ourselves and in how we live our lives is also invited to shift.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the Autumn Equinox marks the beginning of our gradual descent into darkness. As we leave Summer behind, we enter a period focused on going inward: we shift from a period of expansion and outer activity to one of contraction, digestion, and integration. In the Southern Hemisphere instead, we are coming out of Winter: the Spring Equinox is an invitation to celebrate the return of the light and emerge from our cocoon renewed and regenerated, after the months spent in self-reflection.
No matter where we are in the world, the September Equinox coincides with the start of Libra season: this is an invitation to move toward greater harmony and an opportunity to reflect on our relationship to the balance, opposites, and polarities in our lives.
From Virgo to Libra season: Turning Toward the State of our Relationships
The Astrological Sun is connected with the light of our conscious awareness: this is the principle of vitality, self-expression, and true radiance. The Sun has to do with our creativity, life force, and the impulse to shine our light into the world. As he moves through the Zodiac wheel, the Sun illuminates different dimensions of the human experience, inviting us to bring greater consciousness and awareness to the themes associated with each season.
During Virgo season, the spotlight has been on optimizing, refining, and organizing our lives. This time of the year offered us an opportunity to bring more mindfulness into our days and recognize moments of sacredness within the mundane. Virgo season highlighted the importance of being intentional with our habits and choices and taking care of all the dimensions of our health.
As the Sun moves into Libra, our attention turns toward the state of our relationships and matters of reciprocity, cooperation, and collaboration. After learning to distinguish between what nourishes us and what doesn’t, we have an opportunity to recognize what kind of relationships, exchanges, and environments truly support us, and act accordingly. As we move from Virgo to Libra season, we are reminded that taking care of ourselves and taking care of our relationships are not separate processes, and our health and well-being are greatly affected by the people closest to us.
Libra season 2026: Examining the Patterns that Shape our Attachments
Libra season brings the spotlight to how we are navigating, participating, and showing up in all our interactions with other people. Our relationships take center stage during this time of the year: those in our lives are the mirror that reveals what we need to learn, how we need to grow, and where greater reciprocity and harmony are necessary. On our quest for balance this season, we are being asked to reconcile opposites both within and without, and become aware of where we feel tempted to identify too strongly with one side while rejecting and projecting the other.
This season is a moment to become more clearly aware of the patterns that shape our interactions with others. During Libra season 2026, this theme will be especially central, as Libra’s ruler Venus stations retrograde in Scorpio on October 3. Venus’s retrograde is quite rare and will color most of the season with a more reflective and introspective quality, as well as a desire for greater depth and intensity in our relationships. Together with the Sun’s journey through Libra, Venus’s upcoming retrograde will offer us chances to access a more profound understanding of the nature of our attachments to others and the unconscious motives, fears, needs, and desires at the root of our relationship experiences.
