The Story of Amber
Born from the blood of ancient conifer trees, amber is a fossilized resin glowing with the golden light of the Sun. Not technically a crystal or stone at all, it’s a moment in time preserved for eternity, the hardened DNA of nature itself. An ancient record keeper that has been witness to eons of time, throughout all of human history and earlier still, amber holds a depth of historical, cultural, and scientific significance around the world.
In Baltic mythology, a region home to the largest amber deposits in the world, there’s a tale of Jurate, the Lithuanian Sea Goddess, who lived in an underwater palace made of amber. She fell in love with a strong, courageous fisherman and took him back to her palace to live with her, but her hand was already promised to another. When her father, the God of Thunder, learned of her love affair with a mortal, he sent a bolt of lightning straight through Jurate’s palace, shattering it into tiny pieces, killing the fisherman. The amber pieces that wash up from shore in this region are said to be the remains of Jurate’s palace and her solidified tears.
Amber has also been used for thousands of years in ancient Chinese culture. In Daoist stone medicine, it’s known as “the soul of the tiger” and is said to capture or chase away ghosts with its ferocity and courage. Its once sticky sap that traps insects in its wake was thought to demonstrate amber’s ability to ensnare evil spirits. This metaphorically translates to how it combats the mental and emotional “ghosts” of fear, shame, despair, and a negative mindset, bringing courage, a sunny outlook, and a joyful spirit.
The first ever recorded history of static electricity was in 600 BC in Greece, when they discovered that a piece of amber, when rubbed with cloth, wool, or fur, would attract particles of dust, hair, feathers, etc. Ancient philosophers thought this was a magical quality belonging to amber itself and that it had an animating force within it. They referred to amber as “ēlektron,” which eventually became the root for the word “electricity,” etching amber’s important role in scientific discovery into the books of our human history for all time.
The ancient Egyptians cherished amber as well, as Baltic amber was found in King Tut’s tomb. Some Middle Eastern traditions burned amber resin as incense to ward off evil spirits. And in the Chipas region of Mexico, they anciently associated amber with the Sun God, using it in healing ceremonies and making it into adornments.
The electric energy, bright light, and life force that amber holds have been treasured for thousands of years throughout human history. Earth
In ancient Chinese mythology, when a tiger dies, its spirit enters the ground and is transformed into amber. It’s said that amber holds the soul of many tigers, along with the power of many Suns, and this strength is grounded in the element of the Earth.
As amber physically comes from a tree, it is inherently rooted in the energy of the Earth. It takes the spirit of fire and moves it into material form. It springs up and out of the Earth itself, and fueled by the warmth and light of the Sun, becomes the embodiment of this radiant light, helping to ground and root your vital life force into the strength, stability, and security of the Earth.
Amber holds the physical DNA of ancient life on this Earth, capturing insects, plant matter, sometimes even reptiles and scorpions, within it, containing their life force energy in the same way it helps us contain our own, bringing a sense of centeredness, groundedness, and connection with life on Earth throughout all time.

Amber is the essence of a solar plexus stone as it directly harnesses the solar energies of the Universe, to boost the vitality of our own solar power, or soul-power. The solar plexus is the chakra from which we express our energy, emotions, beliefs, and creativity into the world, where we take action and move forward. Physical Properties
Appearance
Amber is found in a range of colors from whitish or light yellow to its most iconic tones of golden honey, rusty orange, and brown, and more rarely, it can veer into green and blue hues. It broadly ranges from translucent to opaque, with some pieces containing both, and often has natural fossil inclusions, most often of insects or plant matter.
The yellowish-orange tones of amber embody the light and fire it holds, which metaphysically move us forward, with courage and confidence, to shine and share our creativity and authenticity with the world around us.
Composition
The composition of amber is highly variable, though it’s generally a mix of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen- the basic fundamental building blocks of life on Earth- plus sulfur and organic matter, such as plants and insects. Amber is a resin that’s secreted from the plant’s cells as a protective mechanism against disease and injury, to heal broken branches, and ward off the stress caused by rapid growth. These qualities transfer to its metaphysical effects in its ability to protect and heal us physically and emotionally, as well as offer defense against the natural stress of life, growth, and transformation.

Using Amber in Everyday Life

Amber is an excellent stone for manifestation, especially to bring more health, prosperity, and success into your life. Like its static electricity attracts things to it in the physical world, so too, amber’s metaphysical qualities attract more positivity and joy into your life, increasing your quotient of inner sunshine, helping you attain what you desire, and bringing beautiful opportunities into your awareness.
It can help you transmute the mindset and patterns that are keeping you feeling stuck or stagnant in your life, unable to get what you want or move forward in the right direction. Amber Varieties
Baltic Amber
This is the most commonly found amber and the most well-known, found along the Baltic Sea. This amber is from the Eocene age, dating around 44 million years old, the remnants of an ancient conifer forest. It’s estimated there are 100,000 tons of amber in this area, including pieces that contain some of the most species-rich insect fossils in the world. Some rare green and reddish (or cherry) amber comes from here.
Chiapas Amber
This amber comes from Mexico and dates back to the Miocene age, about 5-23 million years ago, and was created by an extinct species of legume plant. It’s known for its yellow-orange color and high frequency of fossil inclusions, including insects, scorpions, beetles, and different plants and flowers.
Burmese Amber
This crustaceous era amber dates back to 99-120 million years ago, and is found mostly in Burma. It’s known for its exceptional clarity and high inclusion of insects, and is considered one of the most valuable types of amber due to its beauty and rarity.

Care + Cleansing for Amber
Amber’s ability to attract and transmute negative and dense energies, paired with its softness, makes it a great candidate to cleanse often- at least once a week if you’re wearing it, or after any direct healing work you do with it.
You can run amber under warm water for a quick cleanse, or first rub it with some oil, and then wash the oil off with warm water and dry it with a soft cloth. The oil is thought to grab onto any dense energy the amber has taken on from use, and the water washes it all away, leaving the amber clear and bright.
To recharge amber, you can leave it on a sunny windowsill or outside in the sunshine for up to an hour so it can soak up the solar energy and recharge its natural life force- just don’t leave it in direct sunlight for too long, as it can become cracked or damaged from excessive heat.
You can also leave amber jewelry, such as a necklace or bracelet, to hang off a tree branch for an hour or two and let the energy of the tree and its connection to the Earth cleanse and recharge it.
Amber is very soft and can be easily scratched or damaged, so use gentle cleansing methods like those suggested above and treat your amber with care.
