On October 24, 11:11 AM —

On October 24, 2026, 03:12 AM EST, Mercury stations retrograde at 20º58’ of Scorpio. The Messenger will be retrograde until November 13, emphasizing the power of language and the psychological and emotional undertones of communication. This transit will challenge us to look beneath the surface of everyday situations and notice what is not explicitly said, what we feel drawn to hide, what we omit, and what we are not comfortable sharing, and ask ourselves why.

Mercury’s upcoming retrograde through Scorpio is particularly meaningful for people born with planets or angles in Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) as well as Gemini and Virgo, the two signs Mercury rules. These individuals are entering a period focused on deepening their psychological self-awareness and transforming profoundly rooted ways of thinking and communicating by understanding how their unconscious fears and unprocessed pain are influencing their internal narratives.

After reading this article, we invite you to explore our free Mercury Retrograde eBook, lovingly created to help you reflect, reconnect with yourself, and navigate this retrograde with greater awareness. ♡

Mercury retrograde: Period of Introspection, Reflection, and Reassessment

Retrogrades are the apparent backward movement of a planet from our perspective on Earth. Despite being an optical illusion, these events have strong symbolic meaning, as they invite a shift in our tempo, encouraging us to slow down and question the direction we are moving toward before we continue walking.

Ruling over communication, short-term and short-distance travel, rational thinking, and theoretical learning, Mercury in myth was also a psychopomp, traveling between the world of the living and the world of the dead. Mercury’s ability to move between the conscious and unconscious realms is particularly interesting when this planet goes retrograde in Scorpio, as it brings a potent invitation to explore the unconscious to retrieve information that was previously not accessible to us, or hidden from our conscious awareness.

Mercury goes retrograde three to four times a year for approximately three weeks at a time. This is the most common retrograde we experience, and one that gained a bad reputation, becoming quite infamous in pop astrology. However, Mercury retrograde is not only about travel delays, unexpected shifts in plans, misunderstandings, and technological glitches.

There is a deeper evolutionary purpose to this transit, which is inviting us to go through periods of reflection, revision, and reassessment, rather than continuing to move forward on autopilot: the introspection promoted by retrogrades is ultimately what accelerates our growth and allows us to move in a direction that is more authentic to us. Mercury retrograde also reminds us that it is okay to change our minds, that our understanding of something doesn’t need to be rigid.

Mercury retrograde in Scorpio: Secrets, Privacy, and Disclosure

The Fixed Water sign of Scorpio has a lot to do with everything that happens away from the spotlight, what we tend to hide, and what is going on beneath our conscious awareness. Here, retrograde Mercury brings our attention to our relationship to both our and other people’s secrets and to what we are drawn to keep private and why.

While Mercury is retrograde in Scorpio and during the post-shadow phase of this transit, we may experience the potential disclosure of previously hidden information. Truths we have been avoiding, hiding, or silencing may come to light during this time, and it is interesting to pay attention to how we are drawn to react when we are told something we would rather not know, or when our secrets come to light. We will also have chances to reflect on what we are afraid to share with others, what we are afraid they will know and why, and when withholding information protects us, and when instead it isolates us.

Scorpio highlights the importance of trust in all kinds of relationships, partnerships, and exchanges. Both Mercury and Venus being now retrograde remind us that intimacy requires honest, vulnerable, and open communication. In turn, open and honest communication requires enough safety to be vulnerable. This is an opportunity to reflect on whether there is enough trust and safety in our relationships, and on why we may feel drawn to hide or omit sharing certain information with the people in our lives.

Mercury square Mars, Jupiter, and the Lunar Nodes, conjunct the Sun

Mercury stations retrograde while squaring Mars, Jupiter, and the South Node in Leo, as well as the North Node in Aquarius. The square to the Nodal Axis is an invitation to explore how our unconscious patterns, fears, needs, and desires are impacting both our personal expression and our participation in the collective and in our communities. Mercury’s square to Jupiter is an opportunity to notice how we balance our desire to understand the bigger picture with our ability to take care of the details, as well as how we integrate perspectives or information that challenge our existing beliefs.

Mercury’s square to Mars in Leo is an opportunity to consider whether our thoughts and words are charged with pride, a need to assert our viewpoint, or a desire to overpower others intellectually. If we tend to take feedback as a personal attack, this is an interesting time to reflect on what may be behind that.

Mercury perfects three squares to Mars in Leo before, during, and after the retrograde: the first exact square occurred on October 2, the second one will be on October 30, and the third one will happen on December 9, when Mercury is in Sagittarius and Mars is in Virgo. During this time, we are being asked to transform how we communicate and assert ourselves, and become more aware of the deeper why behind our instinctual reactions.

The Sun and retrograde Mercury will meet on November 4 at 12º10’ of Scorpio: this event, technically known as inferior conjunction, begins a new Mercury cycle while marking the midpoint of the retrograde. The Sun-Mercury cazimi in Scorpio can be a moment when new truths come to the surface. Around this time, we can access a clearer understanding of what this retrograde is actually about for us, what it is asking of us, what opportunities it is giving us, and what to do with our doubts, our fears, our questions, or the new information that may emerge.

Mercury retrograde in Scorpio 2026: the Power of Language

Mercury’s retrograde period through Scorpio will remind us of the power of language and of the words we choose. Words are spells, and this is an invitation to be more intentional with what we say, how we say it, and what we don’t say, but also with the thoughts we entertain, our internal narratives, and the way we speak to ourselves or name our experiences.

This transit is a potent opportunity to transform our language and our internal narratives. In this process, we may discover that some of the stories we tell ourselves are a result of unprocessed pain, unconscious fears, and conditioning from our past. In the upcoming weeks, we will have opportunities to shine a light on the impact of these factors and break free from ways of thinking and speaking that are limiting us.

This transit offers us an invitation to ask ourselves whether we are suspicious because we are sensing something that is actually present, or we are instead interpreting a situation through the lens of fear, or projecting some old experience into the present. Mercury retrograde in Scorpio is giving us an opportunity to notice where we feel drawn to test people instead of directly communicating what we think, feel, or know, where we find it difficult to say what we actually need, and where we fear being misunderstood or unheard.

During this time, we can access a new awareness of unconscious feelings or conditioning that are distorting our intuition and refine our capacity to correctly assess other people, their intentions, and the meaning of their words.
